GWIRFODDOLWYR
Here, at Radio Glangwili, everyone is a volunteer. We all give our time for free, and are proud to be able to provide a worthwhile service to Glangwili General Hospital in Carmarthen.
Currently there are 36 regular, active volunteers, 2 non-active, with 6 waiting to join.
Until recently, our oldest member was 87 years old, namely Mrs. Elizabeth Rogers, who started with Radio Glangwili back in 1973. A former nurse, she used to broadcast twice a week, but in the last few years had reduced her involvement to a single broadcast a month. She has unfortunately left the organisation, but will still be remebered as the 'mother' figure of the radio station.
Our youngest member is 14 years old, who is accompanied by her friend of 16 years. Our policy requires everyone to be at least 16 years old before they become members of Radio Glangwili, unless accompanied by someone of 16 or older.
Our members include: a retired radio broadcaster, a retired Deputy Fire Chief, an electrician, a retired science technician, college student and lecturers, clients and support workers, school pupils, and a shop till operator. Also a few unemployed personnel.
Anyone wishing to see photographs of our current team, please visit the main entrance of the Hospital where we have a double noticeboard showing photographs of those involved.
Some of the volunteers have moved up the media scene. Angharad Mair, who started with Radio Glangwili, is currently one of the main presenters on television's S4C channel. Richard Rees, who currently has his own radio programme on Radio Cymru, also started with us. Owain Phillips, a past member of the Friday night team now is a political correspondent on television. More recent times has seen the appearance of Craig Macdonald appear on television, who came to Radio Glangwili on work experience from Pembroke school, and stayed on until he ventured to university. According to him, he never thought of having a career in the media scene. And finally, for now, Cai Davies from Newcastle Emlyn has been on a 6 month placement to Radio Cymru, and now works from home as a researcher.
